As winters draw to a close and the heat of summer begins to make its searing presence felt, our minds think fondly of the AC – that appliance which is quite addictive, especially on warm nights. Appliance expert Seema Maheshwari tells us how to make an informed decision while buying an air conditioner.

1. Capacity: The first thing to determine before you buy an AC is the capacity you require – which in turn depends on the size of the room where the unit is to be installed. The rule of thumb specifies 1 ton capacity for every 100 square feet. Determining this aspect is important as installing a unit of lower capacity will defeat the purpose and that with an excess cooling capacity will make you uncomfortably cold and will have to be switched on and off repeatedly.

2. Compressor: Rotary compressors are compact and relatively more silent and easy to repair.

3. Filters: An electrostatic dust filter is good for people who have allergies. An ionization filter clears dust and germs, while an antifungal especially targets fungal spores. Most AC units also have dehumidifiers which reduce ambient humidity, making the space cooler and more comfortable.

4. Star ratings: Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) rates the efficiency of electrical appliances from one to five stars, with one being least efficiency. The choice is obvious. Invertor ACs are also a good option for saving electricity.

5. Sleep mode: Sleep mode is an energy-saving feature that increases temperature by 2 degrees (you save electricity with every increased degree of temperature).

6. Wifi enabled: Many companies are now offering wifi-enabled products that can be remote-controlled via a wireless network.

7. Type: The choice is between window and split versions, and that decision largely rests on whether the room to be air-conditioned has a usable window or not. Window ACs are priced between 15,000 to 30,000 INR, while split ACs range between 17,000 to 50,000 INR, depending on capacity.

8. Brand: Choose an AC brand which fulfills your need of maximum energy- saving through highest EER, best cooling performance and extensive after-sales service. Select a name that has an extensive service network.
