In both, Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui, toilets and bathrooms have long been thought to be afflicted areas of the house. Times have changed. Each one of us requires our own little personal space and that extends to toilets and bathrooms as well. With ensuite bathrooms for every bedroom, it is no surprise that stress and negativity is on the rise. While the trend is only here to stay, by keeping a few things in mind, we can bring down the bad effects to the bare minimum, says Rashi Gaur.

1. Under no circumstances should you have a toilet in the North East Zone of the house as that is the zone that brings you mental peace and clarity. A toilet here will interfere with your thought process and cause ailments related to the head.

2. Make sure that your bed does not share the same wall as the toilet.

3. While designing a toilet, keep it simple. Keep the colours soft. Opt for whites and pastels instead of dark colours like reds and blacks. And while it can be classy and contemporary, make sure that design element is not over the top. Remember this is the zone that gets rid of body wastes. We wouldn’t want to flaunt this zone of the house.

4. Keep the bathroom fittings simple. While silver, stainless steel and ceramic is fine, do not opt for gold fittings as gold symbolizes wealth and symbolically makes the wealth go down the drains or it is simply flushed away.

5. Ideally, have a door dividing the pot and the bathing area. If that is not possible, keep the lid of the pot down at all times and keep the door closed.

6. Having a mirror on the outer side of the bathroom door, is a great way to get rid of the flaws.  This effectively makes the bathroom disappear and is generally a great idea if the bathroom is attached to the bedroom or office cabin/room.  While placing a mirror on the door it is important to ensure that it does reflect the bedroom or the entrance door.

7. Hanging a solid metallic 5-rod wind chime from the ceiling right above the pot will subdue the negative energies emanating from there. This is particularly useful if the toilet is in the East, South East or South of the building/home/office, etc.

8. Make sure that there is no toilet right above the entrance door. This will bring a whole lot of bad luck into the house.
