8 distinctions between leather and leatherette

- Real leather is made from treating animal hide while leatherette is made from PVC -- which is, simply put, a form of plastic.
- Leatherette has a plastic-like feel; leather is softer and more luscious.
- Leatherette is known by various names such as fake leather, faux leather, PU leather or imitation leather among other names.
- Leather typically costs 3 to 10 times more than leatherette. Leather costs start from 450 INR to 600 INR per sq ft, while the costs for leatherette range from 25 INR to 150 INR per sq ft.
- Leather is not waterproof and is susceptible to damage from exposure from sun and moisture. On the other hand, leatherette is waterproof and coated with various chemicals to make it waterproof and simple to clean -- which makes it low on maintenance.
- While leather, being natural, is biodegradable, leatherette is not decomposable and stays in the environment for many years.
- Natural colours are available in leather while leatherette is available in a wide variety of artificial colours as it can be dyed easily.
- Leather is stretchable owing to its natural origin while leatherette is not as flexible and strong.
