A garden is a place where you put up your feet and relax after a hard day’s work. This is also where you spend enjoyable weekends in the company of family and friends. Furniture and plants are obviously fundamental and de rigueur, but if you want to take this spot a notch higher, there are several elements that can help you do so. Designer Deeksha Khatree tells us about the different accessories that can be used to enhance a garden area.

1. Planters: Available in various sizes, shapes and materials, these form a great garden accessory. Placing simple mud pots in the garden is a trend these days. You can also opt for faux-wood cement pots, star-shaped ones, handcrafted ceramic planters, marble pots, etc. Hooked planters packs, which can be mounted on walls or suspended from balcony railings are a way of using areas that cannot be normally greened. These are easy to install, cost effective and available in various sizes (2 inches, 15 inches; or 3 pots, 5 pots, 9 pots, etc).

2. Fountains and cascades: The sound of flowing water is undeniably therapeutic. You can either get fountains/cascades constructed, or opt for (smaller, even tabletop) a readymade piece – there are several options in size and material. Just make sure it matches the theme of your garden.

3. Birdbaths, birdhouses and bird feeders: These will animate your green space by inviting winged friends – always a pleasure to watch. But make sure your selection blends with the look rather than standing out like a sore thumb.

4. Lanterns, lamps and torches: These will add a charming glow to your driveway, patio or flowerbeds. LED or solar versions are energy efficient and easy to maintain. Hanging lanterns – these could be made from paper or other material – suspended in clusters will create an eye-catching installation.

5. Statuary: This is available as metal or stone artworks. Select one based on your style – it could be urban, contemporary or country-style, or even eclectic for a bit of mix and match.

6. Swings and hammocks: These elements take comfort and enjoyment to another level. Readymade swings in different configurations are easily available, as are hammocks.

7. Personal picks: Look out for sculptural rock and wood formations; unusual shapes always add interest. Search for pieces with pockets for planting foliage or flowering plants.

8. Assorted ornaments: Herb-holders, garden balls, endearing animals forms, are some more features that will up the style quotient of your garden.
