It is said never judge a book by its cover. This statement stands true for home design as well. Mostly people prefer renovating their interiors over the exterior of their house, the reason being exterior treatments are complicated, time taking and more technical. But when it comes to a perfect home, it’s the outside that counts as well. Architect Onal Kothari puts forth few pointers to keep in mind for exteriors.
- Style: Style speaks louder than words. An elevation at the entrance gives out positive vibes. It reveals a lot about its owner. Another thing to keep in mind is budget. Consider factors like how would you want your house to look like, what would be the facade treatment etc.
- Balance and symmetry: Like in every form of design, balance and symmetry are the key pillars to achieve a well-designed space. A proportional home exterior increases visibility.
- Landscaping w.r.t. directions: Garden outshines your windows. Develop a climate–friendly garden with respect to the direction of the sun. This not only balances the wind flow but also encourages the absorption of natural light, gradually minimising annual expenses.
- Contrasting colours with respect to neighbourhood: Your exterior should be responsive to the locality. Think about a pale exterior in Rajasthan suburbs or an ACP (aluminium composite panel) paneled home exterior in the midst of Mumbai’s colonial architecture. The exterior should have a visually pleasing composition.
- Form follows function: The space should be visually appealing and justify with every functional aspect and personal comfort. This can be achieved with right material selection, assigning proper doors and windows placements and inclusion of landscape.
- Amazing entryway: A welcoming entryway contrasting the colour wheel of your main gate, the garden, elevation materials and lot of other features freshen up your exterior.
- Lights: Proper lighting offers your home a sense of security and leaves a subtle impact when the sun goes down. Outdoor lighting brings out your personal style with many bold statements.
