The words rustic decor bring to mind a style inspired by nature. As the name suggests, this theme has pronounced woody tones and it helps you stay connected with the past. Ruchi Sabharwal of Ruchi S Design tells you how to weave it into your home…
1. Furniture: A mix of wood, stone, bamboo, glass and different types of metals can be used in the furniture to get the rustic look. Adorning with vintage pieces is a great idea too. Furniture infused with metal work stands out in this theme.
2. Flooring: To add a natural and simple appearance to your floors, wooden planks are your best bet. It maintains the contemporary feel of the room.
3. Walls: The rustic theme screams simplicity to the core. Since white colour is considered to be simple, versatile, cheerful and bright, using white on the walls will help you attain the rustic charm.
In keeping with the predominantly organic flavour of this style, accessorization, too, should be back to basic: objects with a worn-out feel or handcrafted gain importance.
4. Ceilings: This style is all about being close to nature as far as possible. Large and chunky beams on the ceiling and exposed beams retain the nature feel of the room.
5. Colour palette: As rustic is all about earthy tones, muted tones such as pine green, mud brown, etc are your options. Accessories and furniture in white can also lighten up the room a bit.
6. Soft furnishings: To add a little bit of drama to your interiors, incorporate cowhide rugs or sheepskin throws in the rustic theme. Linen throw pillows, sisal, hide and jute adds to the natural appeal. Fake or real handcrafted pieces such as woven textiles add power to the rustic decor. Avoid tailored pieces as they will dilute the theme.
The rustic style is unpretentious. Exposed graining and textures and light-filled interiors, here, speak about a life simply lived.
7. Accessories: Objects that have a worn-out feel gain prime importance in this decor style. Select nature-specific pieces. Woven baskets are something that can be kept either in the kitchen or used as a centre piece in your living room. Driftwood accents are another option.
