If you have the right tools, the right products and the right technique, and if you undertake regular cleaning, it won't be incorrect to say that your shower area will be in mint condition even after years of use. However, if you turn a blind eye to the same, be prepared for a grind… with lots of elbow grease.

Things you will need: Tub, tile cleaner, liquid dish soap, spray bottle, double-sided sponge, micro-fibre cloth, baking soda, full-strength vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and lemon oil (for a fresh, citrusy smell)

1. Put equal quantities of vinegar and water in a spray bottle, and spray on the shower to get rid of soap scum. Add lemon oil for a refreshing fragrance.

2. Make a paste of baking soda and water and use it to clean gunk that's stuck in the shower.

3. Replace water with vinegar to banish tough stains.

4. Sprinkle baking soda and then spray undiluted hydrogen peroxide (it's inexpensive, antibacterial and a strong bleaching agent), and leave this on for a few minutes on the shower. Rub/scrub with a cloth or a brush.

5.Fill a polythene bag with vinegar, immerse your showerhead in it and tie it up. Leave for 1 or 2 hours. Your shower head will look as good as new.

6. Mix baking soda and liquid dish soap and apply on the tiles, the tub, and grout with a brush or sponge, and leave for few minutes. The baking soda acts as abrasive agent to dislodge stubborn residue, while the soap breaks down grease and oil.

7. Make a mixture of 1/3 cup ammonia, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/2 cup baking soda and 7 cups of water, spray it and leave for a few minutes. Vinegar and baking soda create a cleansing bubbling foam that can be rubbed off with a sponge or cloth, followed by a wipe with clean cloth.
