Window or split AC? Atul Kulshreshtha tells you the difference between the two, and which one is more appropriate for which situation.
1. There are two types of ACs: window and split. The cassette AC is a kind of split AC. Typically, ACs of 3-5 tonnage are used in homes.
2. A split AC has two units: indoor and outdoor. The indoor unit has the cooling coil and blower, and outdoor unit accommodates the compressor and condensing coil. All these parts are housed within a single unit in the case of a window AC.
3. Window ACs are placed within a window, while a split AC is mounted on a wall. The specialty of a cassette split is that only the grille/vent is visible in the room, while the body gets hidden within the false ceiling. The outdoor unit, like that of a 'normal' split can be house in the balcony or the terrace. This is the reason why designers prefer this type.
4. If room has a high ceiling, position the split AC at a lower level, preferably at 10 ft to 11 ft, else it will consume more power to cool.
5. If the room doesn't have many windows or is surrounded by more rooms, a split AC is the only option left.
6. A room with enough windows can be fitted with a window AC since the external portion of this appliance needs to be fixed outdoors to let the warm air pass through.
7. The ACs are available in different ranges from 22,000 to 1 lakh INR, depending upon their capacity and brand. However, window ACs tend to be cheaper than split ACs.
