Warmer temperatures and bright blue skies are best enjoyed outdoors as long as you are comfortable. All that is needed is lots of plants and some thinking about what goes into making a terrace space enjoyable for all. Shami Goregaoker, Project Manager and design strategist, GA design gives simple tips to beautify your terrace space.
- The first step to decorating a terrace is flooring. Wooden flooring, rustic tiles or colourful tiles with classical prints are some of the options to perk up the terrace space.
- Keep some furniture that can be moved around. This helps when you’re entertaining a large number of people.
- Weatherproof materials like cane or rubberwood furniture with loose cushions is a practical option as the cushions can be removed during the monsoon season.
- For a more rustic look, you could opt for wrought iron furniture. A large awning or a patio umbrella provides protection from those extremely hot and sunny days.
- Consider interesting lighting options. It is practical to install dimmers in your regular lights so you can create a relaxed atmosphere. Accent lighting helps in setting the mood for a cozy evening. You can use candles, lanterns, rope lights and designer tea light holders to help create an intimate ambience for your guests.
- Do make sure you have some great music to entertain your guests. Various outdoor music systems are available for both small and big spaces. Or you could just plug in a set of speakers into your ipod and play the music of your choice.
- Whether dividing the outdoors into specific areas or sharing the space for activities, it is important to be aware of how your terrace will be used. Outdoor entertainment can be changed periodically to suit different weather requirements. It is important to bring in elements of the indoors of your home to the exteriors. However you choose to use the space, remember to take advantage of every corner available to create a space you can be proud of.
