India has a hot and humid climate and thus it will help if the roofing material is weather efficient as it is the most exposed surface through which heat gain occurs. Architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar points some of the materials that can be used for reducing the heat load of your home and improving the living quality.

1 Slate:

This is a highly durable and versatile stone tile as it remains cool even in hot weather. Other benefits include beautiful finish and exclusive high-end look.

2 Terracotta or clay:

Popularly known as Mangalore tiles, terracotta or clay is an excellent option to cool down your house. Also, they tend to give a traditional look to the house.

3 Concrete:

Although concrete roofs are known to heat up the space, white or coated concrete roofs with specialized materials tend to reduce heat load. The coating has high reflective properties.

4 Green roofs:

These are spaces treated with waterproof material wherein vegetation is allowed to grow in the soil underneath. This not only increases the intangible benefits but also provides a healthy environment. Plants and even small trees can be grown on your roofs and you can make your personal terrace garden.

5 Solar roofs:

While solar panels system can be installed at your home to provide for your energy needs, they also shield your roof from excessive heat. The generated energy can be stored in a photovoltaic cell and can be used to power up appliances in your home.

6 Wood:

This is a traditional roofing material that helps to manage the internal temperature very efficiently. The only drawback being wood needs regular maintenance and replacements on a regular basis. Hence, it can be expensive in the long run.

7 Shading:

The simplest and easiest option would be to shade parts or the whole roof with plastic or metal sheets and reduce direct sunlight absorption. These sheets are available in various colour options and can be used for external application. However, they do not necessarily provide cooling effect to a higher degree.
