Kitchen is the ruling space for every home. This space demands the most of electric circuits for kitchen equipment like refrigerator, mixer, microwave oven etc. If you are among the one trying to convert your traditional kitchen decor into modular kitchen interior, architect Alok Bhagat gives you a checklist for the electrical circuits a typical modern kitchen would require.

  1. Refrigerator: We all have a refrigerator at our home and it helps a big family and its eating habits. A modern refrigerator requires a dedicated 20 amp, 120/125 volt circuit. Also, with this dedicated 20 amp circuit, 12/2 NM wire is selected for wiring purpose.
  2. Microwave oven: This equipment also needs a dedicated 20 amp, 120/125 volt circuit. It is applicable for both countertop model and inbuilt cabinet designs (as per your interior call). It’s an advice to make an independent circuit for bigger microwave ovens.
  3. Small appliances: Two switch sockets to serve the counter with 20 amp, 120-125 volt circuits are the minimum requirements to run your small kitchen appliances, such as toaster, coffee pot, sandwich maker, mixer etc. If you have a big family or are a host who love to cook, it is advisable to install more sockets as per your requirements.
  4. Chimney and electric hob: To feed more number of people, you need one circuit of 20 amp with 120/125 volts. Also, note that modular designs offer an electric hob and chimney duo. This increases your circuit requirements.
  5. Dishwasher: A 15 amp circuit with 120/125 volt circuit fed with 14/2 NM wire with ground is all that your kitchen dishwasher requires. You can also install a 20 amp circuit with 12/2 wire. Be sure that the cable is big enough to offer a pull-out and in-facility for the dishwasher while in use.
  6. Food disposer: The ‘clean is healthy’ motto always works best for the kitchen. This garbage carrier demands a 15 amp circuit. If you follow the cleanliness systems strictly, it is advisable to install one in your kitchen.
  7. Lighting circuit: No room is complete without lights. Depending on your kitchen size and selection of your ceiling fixtures, lights etc, you are free to follow a 15 amp circuit to brighten up your cooking area.
