If India has vastu shastra, China has feng shui. Derived from the words feng and shui, meaning water and air, ancient Chinese science can be helpful for happiness at home and success at work. Vastu expert SK Mehta educates us on its basics.
- The most important factor in feng shui is ‘chi’, or life force. In ancient times, the Chinese believed that this fundamental energy flowed through everything. It is said that homes with a regular flow of chi, result in peaceful and happy lives.
- Chi may be dependent on the region the house is located in, the position of the main entrance, the construction of various rooms within the house, the alignment of furniture and also the interior decoration at times. These factors can impact the energy flow, positively or negatively. The main objective of feng shui is to get as much flow of positive energy as possible.
- According to feng shui, the presence of water bodies – ocean, lake, river, pond, water tank or fountains – near the entrance of the house is considered lucky.
- Water is considered as a symbol of money and flowing water, a symbol of inflow of money. Hence, flowing water at the main entrance stands for money flowing into the house. However, in case of a west-facing house, it is better to have the water body above the ground (in the form of a fountain, for instance) than underground. Also, having a water source at the doorstep of a south-facing house is not considered lucky.
- In feng shui, the silhouette of an undulating mountain range stands for energy and represents the dragon, an ancient symbol of auspiciousness and purity. Therefore, a house or a building near a mountain is considered good. Having a house with a mountain towards its rear seems as if it is under the protection of a dragon. In some Far Eastern countries, ancient palaces have artificial mountains created at the back for the same reason. However, only ranges that are humpbacked or blunt are considered lucky, and not ones with sharp peaks.
- Homes located on a plain, can benefit by using a photograph of a mountain in the drawing room, living room, or study/office.
- Since chi enters a place from its main door, it should not be blocked by pillars, trees, rocks or any other obstacle as this will restrict the free flow of energy. In case the door already has some sort of an obstacle, the situation can be remedied by placing a lamp, mirror, flowering plants or a fountain near it, or suspending a crystal ball. Metal elements such as latches, handles and letter boxes also negate harmful energies. Windchimes, with their melodious tinkling, reduce bad energy and the effect of obstacles in front of doors.
