Whether you live in your own house or a rented one, a flat or a stand-alone bungalow, plants play a prominent role in your prosperity at your home according to vaastu. However you need to make sure that the plantation is done in the correct directions, says SK Mehta.

1. A garden should be constructed in the East, West, North or North East part of the plot.

2. Grow plants that are light, small and less dense towards the North and East so that the positive energy that emanates from these directions is not obstructed.

3. You can plant bigger trees towards the South and West, but make sure they are located at a distance from the house. However in the west and south you can plant big and dense trees, but they should be a bit far from the house. Creepers on the West are allowed. Ensure that there is no tree right in front of the entrance of the house and in the North East section. Only tulsi (holy basil) is considered good in the North East.

4. Thorny plants such as babul trees aren't good around the house; they create many problems and fear from enemies. Plants which exude a milky sap are considered to be responsible for financial loss.

5. Fruit-bearing trees are considered bad for children. Such trees, if planted in the South East section, can be extremely problematic and downright fatal.

6. If you have trees around your house that are considered unlucky but cannot be removed for some reason, plant a lucky tree such as ashoka, maulsari, jackfruit, nagkeshar or shami between them to eradicate their negative effects.

7. A plantation with an even number of trees is considered to be lucky.
