Architect Onal Kothari helps you understand the different applications of rope in different locations and its alternatives

1Ceiling:

Ropes can be criss-crossed, forming a suspended false-ceiling, on a frame hung from the ceiling. This opens up the room and creates a little creative element in the space.
Advantages: Low maintenance as compared to POP false ceilings or wooden ceilings.
Substitutes: Plaster of Paris, wood.

2Partition:

Rope partitions, although conveying strong transparency, also give a strong sense of division and parting. This only requires a feeble amount of space and adds effect when used with wooden elements.
Advantages: Apart from being low maintenance, they add a rustic look to the backdrop of a room.
Substitutes: Wood, jaali, fibre, fabric, glass, aluminium etc.

3Lights:

Ropes conceal the unsightly wire of the light units as well as give a rustic, forest like appearance to it. It gives you an opportunity to experiment with the lights to treat individual units as dining hangers or stylish lamps.
Advantages: The wires remain hidden in plain sight, maintaining the aesthetics together with additional thematic touch.
Substitutes: Conduits, wirings etc.

4Stairs:

Implementing ropes on the staircase helps you achieve a nautical look in the interiors on a whole new level. The handrails have a sturdy, stoic rope strongly attached to the wall knotted with supporting rings. Similarly, more flexible ropes can be tied down as the railing on the balustrade by boat cleats.
Advantages: Flexibility provided by rope reduces injury during accidents and are low on maintenance.
Substitutes: Wrought iron, wood, steel, stone.

5Writing:

The flexibility of the rope can be utilized in written words. Your room can get a whole new meaning. Whether it is for the name board outside your house or putting up a message inside, rope lettering will always make it much better and give an aesthetic feel. You could glue the write-up on a surface or nail the rope strategically slightly above the board for extra effect.
Advantages: The flexibility of rope makes ‘writing’ easier
Substitutes: Sheet-cutting, wool, wood.

6Bedside headboard:

This element can add a creative feature to your personalized room. For example, you can have a criss-cross grid rope design along the headboard frame of your bed.
Advantages: Rope headboards are low on maintenance and provide easy rear access.
Substitutes: Plain wooden boards.

7Rustic wooden shelves:

Hang ropes on a cleat and knot it under a wooden plank and place it strategically on any unadorned wall to make it look more natural.
Advantages: Easy to clean and easy rear access. Simple installation and easy to move.
Substitutes: Steel shelves, wooden shelves, racks, cabinets etc.
