Tejas Soni, product designer, Tejas Soni Design, shares different ways to decorate your home with products using the Dhokra art.

  1. Home décor: There is a tremendous possibility to decorate a home with objects made from age old dhokra craft. Objects like decorative platters, containers, vases, photo frames, tea light candle holders and sculptures made from dhokra craft, inspired from nature, geometry, figurative forms and organic shapes can enhance beauty of the available flat surfaces like on top of the dining table, side boards beside dining, T.V. cabinet, console in pathways and lobby areas, corner tables of living area, coffee tables, space divider shelves, wall niches and kitchen counters. Other decorative objects like hanging bells, fancy hangings and wall murals can be used to fill in the gaps to beautify home spaces. In addition to this devotional accessories like pooja thali set, incense stick holder, diya and pooja bell made from dhokra can be used to enhance the beauty of pooja rooms.
  2. Dining accessories and cutlery: Exquisite dining accessories and cutlery made from dhokra art can enhance the beauty of fine dining. The craft can be used to make utility products like plates, biscuit platter, bowls, fruit bowls, salt and pepper shaker, spoon and fork, serving spoons, coasters, trivets, napkin holder, napkin rings, butter dish, butter knife, fruit picks, etc. Materials like wood, bamboo and cane can also be mixed with dhokra. Other food grade materials like stainless steel and glass can also be mixed with dhokra to make it safer for food items.
  3. Barware: Champagne glasses, wine glasses made by fusing dhokra with glass can add creative value to any home bar. Other bar accessories like bottle opener, wine cork opener, wine coasters, wine bottle holder, ice tongs, stirrers and dry fruit serving bowls can also be made using dhokra craft.

Hardware range can include door handles, door latches, stoppers, pulls, knobs, cloth hangers, wall hooks, etc.
  5. Art Installations: Life size dokhra object inspired from flora and fauna can be interpreted in the form of garden installations. Innovative designs/ figurines in the form of wall art installations which vary in sizes can be used as wall art. Small dhokra pieces can be welded together to form a large wall and floor standing installation.
  6. Furniture: Dhokra craft can be incorporated in furniture and interior spaces. Dhokra figurative frame can also be mounted on furniture’s like on the headboard of the bed, coffee table top, dining table top, partition screens, mirror frame boarder, etc. Dhokra craft incorporated in furniture can be treated with various different surface finishes to suit the theme and colour of furniture and interior space. You can achieve a wide range of surface finishes on dhokra products like green-brown- black patina, black oxidation, silver-gold- copper plating, tarnished, polished and matt finish.

Tejas Soni is an Indian born artist and trained designer based out of Jaipur (Rajasthan). Inspired to work with Master Craftsmen whose skills in the traditional Indian crafts were unutilized, Tejas decided to stretch the limits of the crafts and create timeless products.
