1. Furniture: The vintage style generally incorporates classical furniture, whose colour can be as per your needs. Opt for iron-based furniture for an antique look. Furniture polished in shades of rich cherry wood complements the space and neutral flooring. A French-style mahogany console with very little paint on it is another great add-on. Wingback chairs in floral brocade and antique rattan armchairs will enliven the space and strike an exotic note.
2. Fabrics, rugs and more: Go for worn-out rugs, painted floorboards and soft dainty furnishings. Textured fabrics adorned with delicate patterns bring out the vintage look. Crochet patterns, satin sheen are all part of the vintage theme. For privacy and an airy feel, light fabrics like lace are apt. For a vintage twist, a mix of patchwork quilt in different colours and cushions in retro fabrics such as fleece, patchwork, etc can be used. A revamped headboard with decorative mouldings also adds to the vintage appeal.
3. Decor: Use vintage frames to display pictures and paintings. Oversized old-world clocks look great. Since this style is all about functionality with a twist, try out wall stencils to hang jewellery. Hooks in brass, white and gold with a floral theme can also be used to get the antique look. Storage boxes and chests are decorative vintage pieces that can be put to use. You can hang articles from your thrift store and give the walls a unique gallery-like dimension.
4. Colour scheme: Keep the colour scheme warm with white, beige, caramel, vanilla, etc. Glam up the vintage style further with metallic colours. Soothing hues of grey, soft blue, pink are preferable. Neutral shades add tranquility to a space.
5. Walls and ceilings: To break the monotony, give the walls a twist with horizontal lines. Curtains with vertical stripes in different colours will complement your walls. Khaki shade is another option that will give a soothing touch. Colourful wallpapers, too, can be used to add the much-needed fun element to a space. For a modern twist, use floral wallpaper with different accents and polka dots. To add simplicity to the ceilings, use rough-hewn beams. A combination of wood, wallpaper, vintage ceiling sets the right tone for the vintage mood.
6. Flooring: Redefine your floors with pine planks in light colours. It helps in retaining the airy feel and adds character to a space.
