Before buying a new AC, pay attention to these points so that you don’t get slapped with a huge bill later on, says Atul Kulshreshtha.
- The capacity of an AC is measured in TR, i.e. Ton of Refrigeration, also known as ton.
- The kind of AC you need to get in your room is decided by the number of people using that room (for bedrooms) and the room’s size. Usually a 1-ton AC is adequate for a room of two with volume of 1,000 cubic feet (10 ft x 10 ft x 10 ft).
- Tonnage is also decided by the heat load. For instance, if the room mentioned above has electrical appliances/fixtures such as a computer and LEDs, you’ll need an AC of a larger capacity.
- It’s a myth that higher the AC is mounted, greater is the cooling. It’s a well-known law of thermodynamics that hot air rises, while cool air settles down. Thus, the lower portion of the room gets cooled first, followed by the one at seating level. Hot air, being light, is simply filtered out.
- The market has 1-5 star rated ACs. The higher the star rating, more the saving in the electricity bill.
- ACs also come with an automatic turn off feature. Once you set the temperature, the AC automatically cuts-off, temporarily shutting down the compressor.
