The entrance gate is the first element of your home that a visitor notices. It also helps create an impression about the house and its occupants and provides security and protection for the residents. The entrance gate design should therefore reflect the design and philosophy of the occupants. Architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar lists the different factors to be considered for an entrance gate.
- As security is considered the main factor for an entrance gate, stay away from horizontal slits because one can climb them easily.
- Having a fully opaque or blocked gate like panels of wood or metal will ensure full privacy from passers-by, especially if you have a view inside the house.
- An entrance gate should preferably be placed at a side and not in the middle of the plot line.
- If the plot is a corner plot with roads on two edges, then it is advisable to take the entrance gate on the smaller road to avoid the vehicular movement on the wider road. This will also help in maintaining privacy.
- If the plot frontage is small and the door cannot open fully, you can install a sliding door to have maximum opening. This ensures maximum space for vehicular movement. On the other hand, if you have a big enough plot frontage, a separate smaller gate can be installed for pedestrian movement.
- The entrance gate should be sturdy and strong to withstand frequent use. If you have metal gates it should be painted once in a while to avoid rusting and peeling paints.
