Do modern design, simple hues and straight lines attract you? Then perhaps the sleek style of decor is where your heart lies. Ruchi Sabharwal of Ruchi S Design tells you the rules of this game.

1. Colours: For the sleek and modern style, minimalism is the key. You can opt for white as it makes the space appear light and warm. It also stimulates a sense of simplicity and calmness. A combination of black, grey and white works wonders too. Neutral colours or a single bold colour also does the trick and makes you feel stress free.

2. Furniture: Avoid using too many furniture pieces. The modern and sleek style can also be achieved with unique design furniture like sofas and chairs with exposed legs, no tassles and trims in beds, etc. A combination of matte lacquer and natural wood can also be used to create a stunning look. Opt for hidden storage as much as possible to get the clutter-free look. Also, arrange the space well for a neat environment.

3. Textures: In keeping with the no-clutter direction, limit the use of textures and patterns as too many of these will increase the visual weight of the space.

4. Accessories: Too many accessories are a killer. A centre piece that stands out amidst minimal furniture would be a great idea too. Monochrome carpets against a single colour background space add the much needed charm. A play of mix and match materials and fine lines also gains emphasis in this style. Similarly, a neatly arranged shelf against an accent wall adds glamour.

5. Organization: The emphasis is again on hidden storage. Only keep necessary stuff visible, arranged neatly on counters, consoles and shelves or within cabinets.
