A study room is a place used for paperwork, computer work or reading. This space can either be used by children, old or elder people. A calm and comfortable study room makes it easier to enjoy the tasks that can be carried out in this space. Architect Aman Gandhi gives simple tips on the different aspects of the study room.
- Doors and windows:
The doors should be less than 3 ft wide and 6 ft 9 in high. It should be side hung and open on the walls, not in the middle of the study room. The windows should be fitted with glass shutters or fixed glass with minimum gap to reduce dust. If the outside noise level is high, double glazed windows should be used. Also, films and blinds help to reduce glare. - Flooring:
Marble tiles and wooden flooring are commonly used in the study room as they are durable and give proper ambience to the room. Ceramic tiles in different colours can also provide similar qualities. - Light and ventilation:
This is the most important factor that affects the atmosphere of any room; the study room is no exception. As this room is all about reading, good lighting and ventilation is crucial. For ventilation purposes, the room should have one or more windows and ventilator openings that let in external air or an open verandah with a maximum width of .4 mt. Also, ensure that this room gets maximum daylight as sunlight gives positive energy and no dim lights. Avoid reflections to reduce strain. - Colours:
Bright and soothing colours like cream and white are preferred in the study room as they reflect light; avoid dark colours. You can use tints of greys and blues for walls. Paint the furniture in a neutral colour like white. - Study table and chair:
Have what is essential as too much furniture causes distraction. As far as the placement of furniture is concerned, the study table along with the chair should be placed in such a way that isn't too much glare from the sun. It is said that space in front of the table aids inflow of fresh ideas. The table should have enough drawers to keep stationary items. Also, its surface should be anti-glare. The chair should be a comfortable one, but not so much that the person starts feeling sleepy. Ensure to keep the table clutter-free at all times. Installing a notice board or soft board in the room is always helpful in keeping oneself updated. - Shelves and drawers:
There should be enough drawers to keep important stuff safe and enough shelves to ensure less clutter in the room.
