A door is a moving structure used for privacy and security purposes. It allows access to the entrance, building or residence. Architect Aman Gandhi gives the different options available for entrance doors.
-
Wooden doors: These are installed primarily in traditional and heritage homes. Insulation material can be sandwiched or injected between wooden panels for better insulation. Due to its strength and aesthetics, this material is preferred over others. The disadvantage of using wood is that it is prone to attacks by insects. Therefore to increase its durability, regular treatment is required. Another disadvantage is that it needs to be painted, stained or varnished regularly to seal the wood and protect it against weathering effects and humidity. Also for good air-tightness, use interlocking weather-stripping and replace periodically or whenever necessary.
-
Fibreglass doors: This material is moulded around a polyurethane core, which provides superior rigidity and resistance to cold temperature and moisture damage. These doors are available in wide variety of colours and textures. Moulding techniques coupled with the use of stains and other wood finishes give the appearance of a natural wood grain. Fibreglass doors are easy to maintain and can be cleaned easily with soap. To ensure the longevity of these doors, check its weather-stripping regularly.
-
PVC door: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a lightweight material that is weather and corrosion resistant. The steel reinforcement used on the inside of the door makes it rigid, reducing heat and energy loss. The advantage of PVC doors is that it is easy to clean and doesn’t fades away, discolour or turn yellow with time and requires minimum maintenance.
-
Aluminium doors: This weather-resistant option is mainly used for patio doors, storm doors and screen doors. As aluminium is lightweight, it makes an ideal option for sliding doors. Another advantage is that aluminium doors can be powder-coated with any desired colour as per your theme. It is easy to maintain and clean as well.

Steel doors: Made from steel, these doors are often used on vaults and safe rooms to withstand attack. They can also be fitted with wooden outer panels to resemble standard internal and external doors.
