You can't have enough of your favourite money plant… But does that mean a trip to the nursery to pick up new one? Not necessarily, says Ruppa Shah of Surrup Bonsai Farm. Some of the common green house pets can be propagated quite easily by cutting!

Dracaena

1. Take a well grown plant. Identify a hard stem and cut it below the node (a node is the part of the stem of a plant from which a leaf, branch, or aerial root grows). This cutting should be not more than 6 inches tall.

2. Clean the stem by cutting the existing leaves.

3. Prepare a pot with bricks at the lowest layer which helps in draining out excess water.

4. With your hands or a small spoon, place the potting soil (mix of 1/3rd soil, manure and sand).

5. Mark the spot where you’d like the cutting to be planted by making a shallow depression.

6. Press the cutting into the soil and fix firmly with your fingers. You can place as many cuttings as you require for a fuller, bushy appearance. Once the plant grows you have a ready show plant. Keep in shade for 10 days and water just once a day or only when the soil is dry. Since this plant doesn't have roots, it doesn't need so much water.

Follow a similar process for money plant and green chlorophytum (spider plant)

Money Plant: Top the pot with new soil (mixture of soil, sand and manure) and make holes with a bamboo to make the soil porous. Cut the stem below the node and place the cutting in the soil. Press the soil firmly with fingers to fix the cuttings. Plant as many cuttings as you require for a new fuller appearance. Wipe all leaves so that the plant looks like a new one. Keep in shade for a few days.

Green Chlorophythum: This plant has plenty of shoots. Identify a healthy shoot and cut keeping enough length to plant it. Prepare a pot (as mentioned for dracaena and money plant). Place the cutting in the soil and fix firmly with fingers, add more soil.

Some more plants that can be easily propagated by cutting are aglaonema, syngonium and philodendrons.
