The beauty of a wooden floor is undeniable. But this gorgeous product has its own set of challenges when it comes to cost and maintenance. Architect Rishi Sahu tells us what hardwood floors have going for them and what they don’t.

Pros

Hardwood floors are easy maintenance; they can be cleaned with a wet cloth and vacuum cleaner.
Food/water spills/stains can be cleared easily.
According to a survey, houses with wooden flooring are easy to sell as compared to the ones with normal flooring.
They can be used in traditional as well as modern home decor, and are hence put under the 'versatile' category of home furnishings.
If you have seasonal allergy, wooden flooring is good for you.
Wooden flooring is also good for the elderly, as it maintains its temperature according to seasons, thus preventing joint pains.
As compared to other floors, hardwood floors are more durable.
Though they are especially good for winters, wooden floors suit all climates well.
A damaged plank can be changed easily, unlike a ceramic tile or stone flooring.

Cons

Hardwood flooring has a lot of moisture and humidity in it.
A small amount of moisture may ruin the entire wood. Flowing water can also cause the plank to stiffen.
The floor cannot be kept wet for long.
Hardwood floors are costlier than normal floors, and hence are not affordable to all.
Apart from the raw material, flooring installation is also quite costly.
Maintenance might be easy, but refinishing is required frequently – which is also expensive.
