We all plan to do things like residing in a different country, adopting a rescue pet or doing up your dream house before growing old.The bucket list you compiled must include everything from setting up a private sanctuary to experiencing simple pleasures like a beautiful sunny day and peaceful times of reflection by a picturesque lake. Architect Avnish Singh gives you a checklist of things you ought to have in your apartment before you turn 30.
1. Quality sheets and comfortable bed
Invest in well-made bed linens to make each night’s sleep truly relaxing. It is time to get rid of all your mismatched bed sheets that you might have collected right from your college days. By the time you turn 30, you will require something soft. Therefore, stock on extra sheets for guests as well. A comfortable mattress is also a must.
2. Something that brings responsibility
Get yourself some greenery in the apartment. Indoor plants in small size or vertical plantation are some options. This will not only add colour but also provide oxygen to your space. Having pets is another option. Caring for something/someone other than yourselfbrings in a sense of responsibility.
3. Investment piece
This could be a leather couch, an armchair, bean bag or a throne. Opt for a size that suits your space. Invest in good quality leather: one that gets better with age. If you have a piece of furniture that you know will last long and like it, maintain it well. It could have been a gift from someone. This aspect is about committing to something you like.
4. Something that reflects ‘you’
Living in your twenties is all about sourcing stuff from your parents’ basement or your relatives' stock. This is the right time to discover your design impulses. For example, books, sports memorabilia, etc. To add character and value to your space, stock some vintage or limited-edition pieces. It does not have to be something over the top. Just include things that define you.
5. Toolkit
You tend to become responsible for your space as an adult. There will be times when you will have to do few tinkering jobs like tightening a leaky faucet or installing a shelf. For this purpose, keep an all-in-one toolkit handy.
6. Add some entertainment
Depending on your entertainment preference, you could keep a simple dartboard, a small table to play a deck of cards or big enough as a football table. Having something that does more than just make noise and light up, will make your space. If you are thinking of changing your television, opt for one with the biggest one that you can afford. Raise the bar to get the best of what you always wanted.
7. Bar
This is a must if you enjoy drinking. You could have your own bar for your own retreat and if you don’t it is not too late to begin designing one with small purchases.
8. Nook for books
Never mind if you are not a voracious reader. Collect some of your favourite books. Books are great storytellers. They also serve as excellent coffee table decor.
9. Personal wardrobe
By the time you turn 30, it will become essential to have a wardrobe that is well-organized (and thus easy to manage) to make dressing fun.
10. Exposed stuff
To add genuineness to your space, exposed bricks, walls, pipes, wood and furniture that have a revealing property would be required. You can also use elements such as stone, metal or glass that are related to nature. This will make you feel closer to nature.
11. Barbeque
Piling up grilling tools on a tray would become a thing of the past. All you will need is a terrace and a good barbeque kit.
12. Jacuzzi
As you turn 30, you will increasingly yearn for downtime, and a Jacuzzi is just what the doctor ordered.
13. Gymnasium
If you are health conscious, it is good to have a space for your personal workouts. You might have just thought of having one so far. But now you can actually put things into action and personalize a space for it.
14. Relaxing corner
It is time that you design a relaxing space within your house — just for you. For this, choose a corner where you can put a chair, desk or a swing and a few of your favourite things. Play with different items, experiment with colours until you find the mix that feels right.
