Brijesh Singh, assitant manager, Lotus Electronics, tells us the dos and don'ts when it comes to cleaning crockery with the help of a dishwasher.

  1. Do not use a dishwasher to clean wooden utensils like wooden cutting board, wooden spoons, etc, because the dishwasher uses a very strong detergent to clean utensils. Also, wooden utensils may get scratches. The dry heating of the dishwasher not only affects the colour of the utensil but it can also break the utensils. Hence, such utensils should be cleaned with hand. To remove stains from wooden utensils, you can always use baking soda.
  2. Utensils made up of cast iron should not be cleaned using the dishwasher. It should be cleaned using luke warm water. These utensils should also be cleaned using a special detergent and not the normal detergent being used for other utensils. Use a soft sponge to remove stains and dry clean them using a soft towel thereafter.
  3. Dishwasher can be used to clean aluminum cookware, but make sure you use just a single cycle for it. Frequently washing them in a dishwasher may make them look dull. You can clean stainless steel utensils in the dishwasher, but do read the dishwasher’s manufacturing guideline beforehand.
  4. Copper utensils and utensils made of other metal such as gold, silver and bronze start losing their shine and may turn black if cleaned in a dishwasher.
  5. Nonstick utensils will lose its nonstick coating in the turbulence of the dishwasher. Therefore, before using dishwasher for nonstick utensils, do read the dishwasher-safe label on the machine and check the utensils for any kind of damage when washed.
  6. Precautions are must for plastic cookware as extreme heat may damage the plastic and cause them to lose colour. You can wash these utensils in the topmost rack to ensure they do not come in contact with heat.
  7. Never wash any sharp edge utensil like a knife in the dishwasher as it may affect its sharpness. The heat of the washing cycle may also break the knife. Knives are best cleaned with hand.
  8. Delicate utensils like china bowls, crystal and painted plates should never be washed in a dishwasher to conserve their shine.
  9. Use only the specific liquid wash and powder for steel utensils to retain the colour.
  10. For quick washing, soak the utensils with food stains before you put it in the dishwasher.
  11. Since the dishwasher is connected directly to the tap, there are chances that the water pressure and force may also affect the utensils shine. Dishwasher has specific directions for different types of utensils—iron, steel, aluminum, etc and the kind of soaking they require and how much stains they may have. Hence always read the guidelines mentioned on the machine—and depending on the kind of cookware, use the washing pattern required.
  12. When putting utensils in the dishwasher, see to it that no utensil is stuck in the fibre shower because it may cause damage to the plates, spoons, etc. This shower is situated at the top and bottom of the dishwasher and moves in a tremendous speed while washing.
