Expensive and delicate cookware has become an important part of kitchens. Although it adds glamour your cooking space, the maintenance aspect is painstaking. Housekeeping expert Pravesh Pachori lists tips on how to keep your expensive utensils as pretty and bright as new.
- Did you know that medical tablets taken for headache can also help clean the stains off your cutlery? The tablet named akla seltzer when dropped in the water being used to wash dishes can clean the ovenproof glass cookware easily when soaked for an hour or so.
- Wired scrubs may cause scratches. Use a ball of crumpled aluminum foil instead.
- Baking soda is an alternative for various expensive stain removing detergents. Mix a bit of baking soda with a bit of detergent and you will be able to remove the stains very easily from knives and spoons which have oil stains.
- You can cook delicious meals in cast-iron cookware, but the amount of time you spend on removing the stains later is a big issue. Club soda is the solution to this problem as this can help remove stains easily when applied on the slightly-warm pans and pots.
- You can clean aluminum pots which have lost their colour with tarter cream mixed with one litre water. This would get back the shine of the pots when you put this mixture in the pot and boil the water for about 10 minutes.
- Denture tablets (meant to prepare dental dentures) can be used to clean the enamel cookware or the utensils which have heavy work like meenakari. For this, fill the utensil with lukewarm water and put in around 1-2 tablets, depending on the size of the utensil. After some time the sizzling sound will stop. This is when you can clean the utensil.
- Fabric softeners or conditioners can help you clean the casserole in a better way rather than using scrubs causing scratches. Fill the casserole with fabric softener and leave it for some time. This would clean the stains.
- Keep burnt pots in the freezer for around two hours. Food particles will be easlier to dislodge.
- Use ketchup on copper or metal utensils which have started losing their shine. It is not only a better option than detergents and liquids, but also you don't require wearing gloves while using ketchup for dishwashing. Apply ketchup to the utensil and leave it for around half an hour or so. The acid present in the ketchup would clean the stain and you would be able to remove the stains easily. Tamarind paste also serves the same function.
- To clean the Pyrex cookware, wear rubber gloves and apply oven cleaner on the utensil. Now keep the utensil in strong polythene and tie a knot, leaving it this way overnight. Then remove the polythene next day and you can clean it easily.
