Interior courtyards were traditionally design elements of houses for hot and humid climate. They helped to cool down the temperature within the house and promote air movement necessary in a humid environment. They also served as a meeting point for large family gatherings. Architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar gives simple tips to make courtyard the focal point.
- Firstly you can include a planting pattern with plants that can grow in shade.
- Secondly, prep up your courtyard with statues and a traditional wooden swing to bring back the old feeling.
- You can also place water containers in strategic locations to improve the aesthetics of your courtyard.
- To create a modern ambience, add sharp elements like concrete pavers interspersed with green patches.
- Include small water features in your courtyard for the soothing sound of flowing water.
- For a natural look and feel, you can add stepping stones on a soft surface.
- If the courtyard is enclosed from all sides, use a glass partition on all sides. This helps to bring light inside the house.
- Create landscaping without grass and water-intensive plants for a minimalistic look. Rocks and succulents are the perfect combination for minimal design.
- Add wooden benches or rock seating to use the space for social gatherings. Also extend space within the house and not building walls along the courtyard space.
- For a rich look, use treated wood or faux wood to the courtyard setting.
