Points to Make You Comfortable With the Idea of Being around Art

Art is traditionally defined as the visual expression of creative skill and imagination, which is appreciated at an aesthetically pleasing and emotionally stimulating level. For an object with a language that resonates with one an all, why is art considered elitist? Why is it that very few of us consider art as an integral step in designing our homes? Hena Kapadia, Gallery Director, TARQ art gallery, helps you overcome your trepidation about browsing through galleries and picking up that piece.

1. Transcend all mediums. In a world that swears by the mantra of collaboration, artists are increasingly moving beyond traditional forms of painting and teaming up with fellow creative thinkers. Venture into the deeply fascinating world of art as photographs, prints, sculptures and even video works for a truly new-age experience.

2. Get personal with the creator. Forge emotional bonds with the art piece by talking to the gallerist and the artist to learn the story behind the inception. You will then nurture the artwork for the intangible value it holds.

3. Art as an extension of 'you'. Why not choose art that echoes your cultural ties, your preferred aesthetic sensibilities and your choice of themes. This will take you a step further from choosing art based on colour palettes.

4. You do not need an aseptic background to house art. Galleries opt for a sterile canvas as they house all kinds of art work. Instead of going bland, start thinking of your artwork in the design phase and accordingly decide on the wall colour and finish./p>

5. Allow the creative juices to flow freely. Take inspiration from the art pieces and feel free to cluster them together, symmetrically or asymmetrically, as you find visually appealing.

6. Answering that ever looming question of at what height to hang your height. Well, as most people say, hang it at eye level so it's comfortable to look at. Why not call some friends over to decide on that perfect height?

7. Care for it like you would a baby. Keep paper art away from direct sunlight to avoid fading. Unless advised by the artist or the gallerist, do not apply any coating to artworks.

8. Take some protective measures. You do not want your artwork to fade in colour or worse, have the paper burn because of sunlight. Take some preventive steps like using tinted glass windows to cut out the UV Rays. You may also frame the paintings with scratch proof, anti-reflective glass or plastic. This will ensure longevity and better resale price!

9. Whether you decide to go for plain wooden brown frames, opulently carved metal ones or go minimally frameless, make sure the art stands out.Art is not expensive! There are several reputable galleries in India who work with young artists – they're are surprisingly affordable! Pick artworks that are available in multiple editions like prints and photographs. These are inexpensive when compared to single edition paintings.
