Uprooting oneself and moving locations is a daunting task. In addition to everything else connected to such a situation, there's always the worry whether your belongings will be transported safely. Professional packers and movers take the responsibility of doing just that. However, though this helping hand may take away most of the stress and burden of packing up your household, you need to do some homework as well before selecting a professional service, says Dev Singhara, Agarwal Packers & Movers, Bhopal.
1. There are two kinds of services: full load and part load/sharing.
2. Your bill will depend on various factors such as transportation charge, packing, labour, loading, unloading and unpacking. Of these, the last two are optional services. In case of a shift in countries, goods can be transported by sea or air.
3. You are required to pay 80% amount in advance before the packing and 20% after shifting.
4. There are two kinds of loading vehicles: 14 feet and 19 feet. Usually, a 14-foot truck is used for shifting locally, while a 19-foot one is employed for long-distance hauls.
5. If you are selecting a service via a social networking site, ensure that it is registered and authentic. Every company has a customer rating which will give you an idea about the quality of service. Choose a company which has a good rating. Avoid selecting a company which advertises through pop-up windows.
6. Once you know the company's name and address, do some research on the internet to find out if there are complaints against the company. If this is the case, move on to the next option.
7. Clear the fees they will be taking as service charges before you make the deal with the professionals. Also, remember to take the invoice and the receipt before the company commences work. Getting clarity about insurance and service tax is a good idea. Usually, a service tax of 14% is levied.
8. Before packing, insure expensive items to safeguard yourself from financial loss in case of a mishap. Usually, transit insurance is a better option for this.
9. Goods up to Rs 1 lakh are insured including the basic risk charges. This is 3% of the former. Some packers and movers also offer insurance services.
10. Three copies of list of goods are prepared while packing: one for you; the second for the people loading your goods; and the third one lies with the company executive. It is recommended that you be present at the time of unloading goods.
11. Shifting pets, plants and vehicles is a big deal. A car can be taken in a loading truck as per the space available, or it can be sent individually. A family member needs to accompany pets while they are being transported to a new place. Plants can be packed in carry bags and then shifted along with other goods.
